| LAX, 6am, on our way out |
There's a couple ways to plan where you go on vacation. You could line it up with work schedules. You could make it sentimental based on a special place. Or you could do something crazy and leave it up to your friends and family via popular vote as part of your wedding registry.
Anyway, here's where we'll be staying in the new year:
- Mexico City for January while I finish up work
- An extended layover in Rome, where we left off on our honeymoon
- Egypt, as our first stop around the world as voted by our family and friends
We've been in Mexico for 2 weeks now, and it's felt like a prologue to a bigger story. Not officially where things begin, but important to set the context.
It's comfortable to us in many ways: big city, great food, walkable parks. We're productive during the day and relax in the evening. We exercise and go grocery shopping and watch TV and get haircuts. We have a doorman. It's more living than vacationing.
And in many other ways it's still an adventure. We get lost sometimes. No hablamos espanol muy bien, but we're trying, and the locals are forgiving. We have a nightly water ritual where we distribute potable water from a 10L bottle into our smaller ones for the next day. We played an electrocution based drinking game. The cops bribed our friend for money. One day I ate only tacos, and the next day I had more of the same tacos, because they were that good. People here are friendly. Mezcal here is good. Weather here is pleasant. And we've covered a lot of ground on foot.
All in all, it's a momentary breath of comfort we've been appreciating as we plan a much faster paced February and March, moving cities every couple of days.
Gracias México, por el prólogo.
